HOLIDAY TRAVEL TIPS & ADVICE
Tuesday, June 29, 2010

The North Carolina Department of Transportation offers these tips for navigating the highways during busy holiday travel seasons:

-Leave early to get a head start on your drive. Travel at non-peak hours when possible.
-Stay alert. Even if work is suspended, you may encounter narrowed lanes and traffic shifts in work zone areas.
-Be patient and obey the posted speed limit. The penalty for speeding through a marked work zone is $250.
-Use alternate routes, when possible, to avoid traffic congestion.
-Stay informed. Real-time travel information is available over the phone by dialing 511, or online at www.ncdot.gov/travel. NCDOT also now offers Twitter updates for motorists and ferry passengers (visit www.ncdot.gov/travel for more information).

To help reduce fuel consumption and save money:

-Don't rush. "Jack-rabbit" starts and hard braking alone can increase fuel consumption by 40 percent, but reduce travel time by only 4 percent.
-Observe the speed limit. Not exceeding 60 miles per hour (where legally allowed) can improve mileage by 7-23 percent.
-Use cruise control. Using cruise control on 10,000 miles driven in a year could save you nearly $200 and save more than 60 gallons of fuel, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
-Remove unnecessary items. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle can reduce your miles per gallon by up to 2 percent. Wind resistance can also reduce mileage so avoid using luggage racks, rooftop carriers and ski racks when they are not needed.
-Maintain your vehicle. Keeping your tires properly inflated, changing your oil and replacing air filters can all help improve fuel economy.

MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE
Monday, May 24, 2010
On Memorial Day (Monday, May 31) the Joint Veterans Committee of Nash and Edgecombe Counties will gather to honor the memories of those who have died in service to their country in the armed forces. At 11:00 AM, area residents will gather at the Rocky Mount Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park with local veterans organization, honor guards and a rifle squad to pay homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Other participants will include keynote speaker, LTC James S Batts USAF (Ret), the Honorable W. B. Bullock, Nash Central HS JNROTC and the Boy Scouts of America. Col. Batts was a B-52 pilot with ninety combat missions over North and South Vietnam. All veterans are encouraged to wear their military uniforms or the uniform of their veterans organization with cover. Please bring your friends, relatives and neighbors to hear Col. Batts and honor those who died so we can be free. Seating will be limited and it is requested that you bring your own lawn chairs.

National Transportation Week
Monday, May 17, 2010
This week is National Transportation Week! Transportation is something that we all probably take for granted, but it takes a lot of work to make sure that area roads, bridges, railways, sidewalks, and other key infrastructure are all working properly. To recognize the many employees who do that work, here are some transportation facts & figures that may interest you:

  • Did you know that Tar River Transit buses travel approximately 1,094 miles on a typical weekday?  Or that seven Greyhound buses depart Rocky Mount every day?  Greyhound destinations include Raleigh, New York, and Norfolk.
  • Eight Amtrak trains stop in Rocky Mount daily.  Twenty CSX freight trains pass through Rocky Mount daily.
  • The City of Rocky Mount maintains 283 miles of streets on a daily basis; the City's Engineering Department also coordinates 3,000 road signs for their installation, repair, or replacement each year.  There are 132 traffic signals in the City with that are managed using a computerized traffic signal system; 85 intersections in the City are signalized with Fire Preemption for emergency response crews.

Shearin Andrews Road Closure
Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Shearin Andrews Road will be closed to traffic effective Tuesday, May 11 for a culvert replacement by Rocky Mount Stormwater Management. The road will be closed to all but local traffic for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed by mid-June. When this project is completed, crews will perform similar work on Nicodemus Mile Road, requiring closure of that road for a similar timeframe. The culvert replacements will help alleviate drainage issues in these areas.
