ECU STUDENTS SHARE VISION FOR DOWNTOWN

This semester, students from East Carolina University's interior design school are designing, as an exercise, buildings in Downtown Rocky Mount. The hope is that their work will inspire and help others to get the “vision” of the potential of these historic properties. The properties that are being used are the Old JJ Harpers Bookstore, Towel Town, the Old Post Office and the Old Bus Station.


The students will present their initial designs this Wednesday, September 23, from 9:00 until 11:00 am in the City Council Committee Room (3rd Floor of City Hall). You are encouraged to attend. Please be advised that they will be making other presentations as the semester (and their work) progresses. These dates are:


  • PROJECT UPDATE: Monday, October 19, 9-11AM; Location: TBA
  • PROJECT UPDATE: Monday, November 9, 9-11AM; Location: TBD
  • FINAL PRESENTATION: Wednesday, December 2, Time TBA; Location TBA

The Rocky Mount Telegram published a special section to commemorate the ten year anniversary of Hurricane Floyd.  This special section was included in the newspaper's Sunday, September 13 issue.  Extra copies of this special section will be available at the Frederick E. Turnage Municipal Building (City Hall) for a limited time.  Stop by today and collect your copy of this keepsake publication.

Workshop for HUBS

The N.C. Office of Economic Recovery and Investment (OERI) will host an Economic Recovery Workshop for Small & Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs) on Wednesday, September 30th, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Rocky Mount Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), 402 Virginia Street, in Rocky Mount.


The City of Rocky Mount will participate as a member of the panel at this presentation, providing information on City programs and projects funded by the Recovery Act. This meeting is open to the public, especially owners of small and historically underutilized businesses (HUBs) who want to learn more about related business opportunities.

Charity Golf Tournament

The North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NCFFF) exists for the sole purpose of assisting fire departments and families with the essential services needed in the event of a firefighter’s death, serious injury, or disabling illness. The NCFFF is staffed with volunteer members that dedicate substantial time and energy to ensure that fallen firefighters lives are honored as well as assisting family members with planning a firefighter funeral when requested. The NCFFF offers such services as providing a family transportation during services, organizing the acquisition of equipment and personnel needed to carry out the traditions of a firefighter’s funeral, and organizing the annual memorial parade to honor those North Carolina firefighters that have lost their lives in the line of duty.


The Rocky Mount Fire Department is pleased to host a charity golf tournament to help raise funds for the NC Fallen Firefighters Foundation.  The golf tournament will be held at Ford's Colony Country Club on Thursday, September 10.  Click here to register!

Hurricane Floyd: Then & Now

The City of Rocky Mount, in cooperation with Nash and Edgecombe Counties, will host a commemorative event to mark the ten year anniversary of Hurricane Floyd, the worst natural disaster in North Carolina's history. Hurricane Floyd: Then & Now will include presentations about the devastating weather event, and will highlight the advancements that have been made in the past ten years. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16 at the Imperial Centre for the Arts & Sciences. The event will begin with a breakfast reception at 7:45 am, followed by the opening session at 9:00 am in the Theatre. The sessions will continue through the afternoon, with exhibits closing at 3:30 pm.

This event will include workshops on topics of interest to elected officials, community and civic leaders,business owners, emergency management and local government professionals, and the general public.  Attendees will hear from several guest speakers, including representatives from FEMA, the National Weather Service, NC Emergency Management, and the US Geological Survey. 


J. Keith Harris, Chief of the Rocky Mount Fire Department, will present The Floyd Experience, which incorporates the astounding facts and figures of Hurricane Floyd's historical impact as well as the regional response and recovery efforts. Former Rocky Mount Mayor Frederick E. Turnage will moderate a panel discussion to provide local reflections on Hurricane Floyd. The panelists will represent various sectors within Nash and Edgecombe Counties.
