The City of Rocky Mount, North Carolina was incorporated on February 19, 1867. The city began to provide public utilities in 1899 with the initial establishment of the water system, which was followed by the wastewater system. In 1902, electric power was added to services provided by Rocky Mount Public Utilities (RMPU), and a few years later Rocky Mount became the first city in North Carolina to operate its own gas system.
Rocky Mount currently operates a public utilities system with over 31,000 households in Nash and Edgecombe counties receiving electricity, natural gas, water, wastewater (sewer), refuse, recycling and/or stormwater services.
RMPU services are provided by the following departments: Energy Resources, Finance (Customer Service) and Public Works and Water Resources.
