The City of Rocky Mount was incorporated on February 19, 1867. The city began to provide public utilities in 1899 with the initial establishment of the water system, which was followed by the wastewater system. In 1902, electric power was added to services provided by Rocky Mount Public Utilities, and a few years later Rocky Mount became the first city in North Carolina to operate its own gas system.
Rocky Mount Public Utilities (RMPU) consists of electric, natural gas, water, wastewater (sewer), refuse, recycling and stormwater services. Each service is provided by one of the following City of Rocky Mount departments:
