Human relations deals with creating an atmosphere that is free of discrimination and conflicts between people based on race, sex, age, ethnic or national origin, religion or socio-economic status. The staff investigates complaints of discrimination and develops programs to promote good community relations. Examples of such programs include:

  • Rocky Mount Area Youth Council - a forum for area junior and senior high school students to identify and address youth-related issues and problems. Click HERE to visit the Youth Council page.
  • Neighborhood Council -assisting with identifying community concerns and scheduling and conducting community meetings.
  • Summer Youth Institute - a summer cultural arts program designed to cultivate the artistic skills and talents of youth between the ages of 12 through 19.
  • Senior Tar Heel Cards - discount cards for citizens 60 years of age and older.
  • Gatekeeper Program - designed to assist vulnerable older adults who might need assistance periodically.
  • Buddy Alert - a child safety program to report an emergency or dangerous situation to mobile city personnel.
  • Volunteers In Partnership (VIP) - volunteers greet and assist citizens with information at city hall and give directions to other city facilities.
  • Dress to Impress - a program designed to asst clients entering the workforce to acquire adequate and appropriate attire.
