Construction work to close road for up to six weeks

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close a section of Independence Drive starting at 8 a.m. Monday as part of a project to widen two miles of North Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount.

Crews will install a sewer line and a storm drain under Goose Branch Crossing near the intersection with the U.S. 301 Bypass during this closure, which should last about six weeks.

Independence Drive will be closed to through traffic between the boulevard and Benvenue Road.

Customers may access businesses on Independence Drive by entering off Benvenue Road. NCDOT awarded a $28 million contract to PLT Construction of Wilson in 2017 to add a lane in each direction to North Wesleyan Boulevard between May Drive and Benvenue Road.

The project also replaced a bridge on Sunset Avenue that reopened last December. The overall widening project is expected to be completed by May 2020.
