The Rocky Mount City Council approved the FY 2019 budget during the June 25, 2018 council meeting. The new budget includes a 2.5-cent property tax increase to pay down debt for the Rocky Mount Event Center. The approved property tax rate is now 68.5 cents per $100 of valuation.

The city of Rocky Mount's total operating budget for FY 2019 is $207,269,690. The budget was adopted after a reduction of operating expenses and capital expenditures. In this budget, a new Technology Services Department will be established; however, seven new full-time staffers were not funded. The new Technology Services Department will no longer function under the Finance Department but will be a stand-alone department with a director. WiFi Connectivity was also deferred. There were cuts for a new wellness coordinator and a third assistant city manager. Housing, however, remained a priority. Funding for housing programs increased from $400,000 to $500,000 for FY 2019.

“I am pleased with the council’s adoption of the FY 2019 budget,” stated City Manager Rochelle D. Small-Toney. “This is my initial year working with council on planning a budget for the city, and my goal was to meet their major priorities, which included housing, community and business development, the Rocky Mount Event Center and roof replacement for the Rocky Mount Senior Center.”
