Eleventh annual Eastern Carolina BBQ Throw Down

Food, music and more to highlight 11th annual Eastern Carolina BBQ Throw Down

The 11th annual Eastern Carolina BBQ Throw Down will be held on the lawn of the Helen P. Gay Rocky Mount Historic Train Station from 5-9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 and from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.

The weekend of festivities will include a BBQ competition, a classic car show and competition, food vendors, live entertainment, children’s activities, a beer garden featuring breweries from Rocky Mount Mills, a Hogs and Hot Rods Cruise-In and more.

Sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society, this year’s BBQ competition will include more than 30 cook teams from throughout the east and more than 30 certified judges. There will be four categories in the competition, including chicken, ribs, pork and beef brisket.

The BBQ competition, open to any BBQ professional, will result in a Grand Champion winning a prize of $5,000.

Classic car enthusiasts will love the Hogs & Hot Rods Cruise-In, an addition that was started at last year’s event. Registration is $5 and begins at 11 a.m. Contestants may enter the festival grounds via Nash Street and Church Street for their opportunity to win a coveted hand-made People’s Choice Award and a Kid’s Choice Award. Proceeds from the Hogs & Hot Rods CruiseIn will also support the Nash County Special Olympics and My Sister’s House.

“More than $20,000 will be awarded to cook teams participating in this year’s BBQ Throw Down,” special events coordinator Kayla Hillman said. “We also give attendees the opportunity to purchase ballots to participate in voting for our ‘People’s Choice Award’ winner. Our main focus is that people of all ages can come out and have a good time. We hope that everyone will come check out what downtown Rocky Mount has to offer.”

Cook teams, brewers and car enthusiasts are not the only winners at this year’s BBQ Throw Down. Guests may win, too by playing Plinko at the Rocky Mount Public Utilities (RMPU) booth for an opportunity to win $100 off their city of Rocky Mount utility bill.

Entertainment will be prevalent at the annual festival, with incredible groups taking the stage throughout the events. On Friday night, Oct. 12, RMPU will sponsor the BBQ Bash on the main stage in front of the train station, featuring music from Darryl Murrill Group from 6-7:30 p.m., and Natural Wonder – the Ultimate Stevie Wonder Tribute Band from 8-9:30 p.m.

Local favorite The Sunspots kicks off the music on the main stage at 10 a.m. on Saturday, followed by Time Sawyer at 11:30 a.m. Party group Love Tribe will close out the evening at 3 p.m.
