Event Center parking plan unveiled

In advance of the Rocky Mount Event Center’s grand opening in October, the Rocky Mount City Council has approved the RMEC Traffic Control Plan.

There will be 328 on-site parking spaces between two lots at the RMEC. There are eight designated lots throughout downtown with a total of 1400 spaces and three shuttle routes to serve the lots.

Additional parking sites include: NE Main St. & Washington St., Tarboro St. and Atlantic Ave., Marigold St. and Arlington St., Rocky Mount Sports Complex, Nash St. (Business Services Center) and Nash St. (City Hall lot).

Shuttle routes will be used as needed depending on the size of the event.

Traffic on NE Main St. will be diverted one way for major events, while Albemarle St. will close for such events.

Based on a study completed by the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, there are 300 spots needed for a tournament, 330 for banquets and 1,820 for major concerts.

“It’s a good plan that offers what is needed and provides flexibility going forward,” city of Rocky Mount Director of Engineering Brad Kerr said.

The RMEC Traffic Control Plan also has been approved by Rocky Mount Interim Police Chief Willie Williams
