Reduction in Purchase Gas Adjustment Fee

The City of Rocky Mount natural gas customers will see a decrease in the cost of natural gas services effective June 1st 2024.

Customers are to be advised of a Purchase Gas Adjustment (PGA) decrease from $0.40 to $0.00 per therm. With this decrease, residential gas rates will be reduced to $1.12 per therm for the first 10 therms used and then to $0.85 per therm for all remaining gas used per month. This decrease to the PGA means the cost to the average residential customer using 100 therms will decrease on average $40 per month. The PGA decrease is effective June 1, 2024, and will remain in effect until further notice. Chris Beschler, Director of Energy Resources stated, “we are pleased that the prices of natural gas have decreased, and we are happy to pass this reduction in cost back to our customers.”

Purchased Gas Adjustment:

Natural Gas is a commodity traded on the open market and its price is based on supply and demand. In addition to buying natural gas on the open market, the city of Rocky Mount also pays to have it transported from the wellhead to the city. Rates are set using a base rate that accounts for transportation, commodity and utility costs. Based on the fluctuating price of the delivered natural gas, the city’s rates may be adjusted if necessary, using a rate mechanism called the Purchase Gas Adjustment (PGA). The city of Rocky Mount does not profit from the fluctuations in gas costs. Instead, all costs associated with increases or decreases in the commodity price of natural gas are passed along to customers through the PGA. If customers have further questions about the reduction in the PGA, please contact Energy Resources at (252) 972-1272.
